18 novembre 2021 – I pazienti oncologici sono più propensi a smettere di fumare di quanto non avvenga tra chi ha avuto un ictus. E’ quanto sostiene uno studio condotto da ricercatori del Weill Cornell Medical Center di New York e pubblicato sulla rivista Stroke. La ricerca ha analizzato i dati di 74.400 persone residenti negli Stati Uniti, fumatori, che avevano avuto in precedenza un ictus e di 155.693 persone (sempre fumatori) con un’esperienza di cancro. Tra gli ex malati di cancro il 71,3% aveva smesso di fumare, mentre tra gli ex pazienti con ictus la percentuale si fermava al 60,8%. Soprattutto, i ricercatori hanno riscontrato che “i sopravvissuti a un ictus hanno il 30% in meno di probabilità di smettere di fumare rispetto alle persone con cancro”. Tra le persone che avevano avuto un ictus, poi, le probabilità di smettere di fumare erano molto diverse in base all’età: il 74,6% di chi aveva smesso aveva più di 60 anni contro il 43% degli under 60. Gli uomini sembrano più propensi a lasciare la sigaretta rispetto alle donne (nello studio il 63,4% contro il 57,8%). Anche vivere in una zona rurale sembra favorire l’abbandono del fumo. Per i ricercatori queste informazioni possono rivelarsi importanti per avviare strategie di comunicazione efficaci volte a scoraggiare il consumo di tabacco tra le persone che hanno avuto un ictus. “Per gli oncologi – osservano gli scienziati – far smettere di fumare i pazienti è una priorità. Questo impegno è coerente con l’osservazione dei dati: dal 2000 il numero di ex pazienti con cancro che hanno smesso di fumare è aumentato. Lo stesso non è accaduto tra chi ha avuto un ictus. Potrebbero quindi rendersi necessari, nei confronti dell’ictus, sforzi simili a quelli messi in campo per diminuire il consumo di tabacco tra gli ex malati di cancro”.
