La vitamina D potrebbe ridurre del 15% la mortalità totale per 18 tra i tumori più comuni. Lo rivela uno studio pubblicato sull’European Journal of Cancer. I ricercatori hanno verificato l’esistenza di relazioni tra i livelli ematici di 25-idrossivitamina D e l’uso dell’integrazione di vitamina D con la mortalità dovuta a 18 tipi di cancro frequenti nella coorte della Biobanca del Regno Unito. Gli esperti hanno studiato i dati relativi a 411.436 partecipanti della UK Biobank, di età compresa tra 40 e 69 anni. I partecipanti sono stati valutati dal punto di vista medico (incluso il prelievo di campioni di sangue e urina), hanno partecipato a una breve intervista e hanno completato un questionario. I ricercatori hanno quindi condotto un monitoraggio delle loro condizioni di salute per un tempo medio di 12,7 anni. Durante questo periodo 12.947 persone sono morte di cancro. I risultati hanno rivelato che la carenza di vitamina D si collega a un aumento del rischio di mortalità per cancro, soprattutto per quanto riguarda il cancro del colon-retto, dello stomaco, della prostata e del polmone. I ricercatori hanno anche scoperto che la carenza di vitamina D aumenta la mortalità nel cancro del colon-retto e del polmone. Inoltre, i risultati hanno mostrato che gli utilizzatori di integratori di vitamina D avevano una mortalità totale per cancro inferiore del 15% e una mortalità per cancro ai polmoni inferiore del 25% rispetto ai non utilizzatori. “I nostri risultati hanno identificato una relazione statisticamente significativa tra carenza di vitamina D e aumento della mortalità tra diversi tumori – afferma l’autore principale dello studio, Ben Schöttker, del Centro tedesco per la ricerca sul cancro. In effetti altri studi hanno scoperto i meccanismi attraverso i quali la vitamina D inibisce la crescita e le metastasi del cancro”, conclude.
