Massachusetts e Pechino, 22 settembre 2021 – BeiGene ha annunciato che il Comitato per i medicinali per uso umano (CHMP, Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use) dell’Agenzia europea dei medicinali (EMA) ha adottato un’opinione positiva raccomandando l’approvazione di zanubrutinib per il trattamento di pazienti adulti affetti da macroglobulinemia di Waldenström (MW) che hanno ricevuto in precedenza almeno una terapia di prima linea e per i pazienti non idonei a chemio-immunoterapia.
“I pazienti italiani con Malattia di Waldenström potranno a breve avere a disposizione una nuova opzione terapeutica che offrirà loro migliori possibilità di cura. Tale informazione deriva dai risultati ottenuti dallo studio clinico ASPEN che ha dimostrato come zanubrutinib mostri sostanziali miglioramenti in termini di prolungata durata della risposta nei confronti della terapia standard nonché miglioramenti nella sicurezza e tollerabilità. Gli inibitori di BTK rappresentano un trattamento promettente nella Malattia di Waldenström dove la mancanza di risposta al trattamento standard e gli effetti collaterali di questi prodotti continuano ad essere motivo di preoccupazione”, afferma la Dr. Alessandra Tedeschi, ASST Grande Ospedale Metropolitano Niguarda in Milano.
“L’opinione positiva del CHMP riflette il potenziale ruolo di zanubrutinib nello scenario terapeutico della MW come inibitore selettivo progettato per fornire l’inibizione sostenuta e continua di BTK, offrendo ai pazienti la potenzialità di frequenza ridotta di alcuni eventi cardiovascolari come la fibrillazione atriale rispetto a ibrutinib, e sottolinea il nostro audace approccio a R&D”, ha dichiarato Jane Huang, M.D., Chief Medical Officer, Ematologia di BeiGene. “Ci impegniamo a portare avanti la registrazione globale di zanubrutinib e, se approvato, riteniamo che diventerà l’inibitore di BTK preferito per i pazienti affetti da MW”.
“Questo parere positivo del CHMP per zanubrutinib ci rende entusiasti perché siamo un passo più vicini alla possibilità di aiutare i pazienti in Italia e in tutta Europa” ha detto Marco Sartori General Manager di BeiGene Italia. “Mentre costruiamo ulteriormente la presenza di BeiGene in Italia, siamo affiancati da un forte gruppo europeo che lavora con le autorità sanitarie per portare zanubrutinib ai pazienti che vivono con questo raro e incurabile tumore del sangue. Un sentito ringraziamento va ai medici e pazienti in Italia ed Europa che hanno preso parte ai trial clinici con zanubrutinib condotti fino ad oggi. E alla gratitudine si aggiunge la speranza di continuare il nostro lavoro insieme, con l’obiettivo di fornire farmaci innovativi, efficaci e di alta qualità ai pazienti in Europa e nel mondo.”
A seguito dell’opinione positiva del CHMP, la Commissione Europea prenderà in considerazione la domanda di immissione in commercio inoltrata da BeiGene, con decisione finale prevista entro 67 giorni dalla ricevuta dell’opinione del CHMP. La decisione riguarderà tutti i 27 Stati Membri dell’UE, compresi Islanda, Liechtenstein e Norvegia.
