Fotografare i migliori percorsi per rendere uniformi la diagnosi e la cura del tumore del polmone su tutto il territorio, valorizzare il ruolo del team multidisciplinare, valutare questa neoplasia su ampia scala dal punto di vista epidemiologico e del trattamento, con particolare riferimento all’efficacia della chirurgia associata alla medicina di precisione ed alla qualità di vita del paziente. Sono i principali obiettivi dello studio LUCENT (Lung Cancer Observational Study), promosso dal Professor Roberto Crisci, Ordinario di Chirurgia Toracica all’Università dell’Aquila, e presentato oggi in un convegno nazionale online (“Il trattamento chirurgico delle neoplasie polmonari”).
Il cancro del polmone rappresenta la terza neoplasia più diffusa in Italia, con poco meno di 44mila diagnosi stimate nel 2022, in forte crescita fra le donne e (meno) negli uomini. I progressi in campo oncologico si stanno realizzando anche nel carcinoma polmonare che, in questi anni, ha registrato miglioramenti in ambito prognostico grazie alla medicina personalizzata e alle nuove terapie che hanno aperto interessanti prospettive, ma molto resta ancora da fare.
“La profilazione genomica del paziente, dopo lo studio delle possibili alterazioni genomiche, permette di trattare in modo più mirato, anche se la percentuale di pazienti che le presentano sono una minoranza – spiega il Prof. Crisci -. Importante è rendere omogenei questi strumenti diagnostici, in particolare l’NGS (Next Generation Sequencing), ancora presente in pochi centri. È opportuno, quindi, che chi è colpito da questa patologia si rivolga agli Istituti di riferimento e possa accedere alle cure più mirate. Nel convegno di oggi, è stata ribadita l’assoluta importanza del team multidisciplinare che coinvolge chirurgo, oncologo medico, radioterapista, anatomo patologo, biologo genetista, psico oncologo, per gestire al meglio la complessità di una patologia dai numeri estremamente rilevanti e che risente pesantemente di scorretti stili di vita, in primo luogo il fumo. Il Covid-19 ha incrementato il numero dei fumatori nel nostro Paese, ed è necessario insistere con campagne di prevenzione che devono essere sempre più mirate, soprattutto verso i giovani”. L’obiettivo dello studio LUCENT sarà proprio quello di analizzare le differenti strategie di trattamento che possano rendere omogenei i percorsi di diagnosi e cura. Troppo spesso l’approccio multidisciplinare è attivo solo sulla carta. È indispensabile, invece, un confronto continuo che possa consentire una condivisione e un approccio sempre più personalizzato anche per queste neoplasie. Lo studio LUCENT, indipendente e senza fini di lucro, si pone obiettivi ambiziosi, proprio per questo sarà realizzata una survey osservazionale che coinvolgerà centri in tutta Italia, da nord a sud della Penisola, con l’obiettivo di raccogliere un numero di casi statisticamente significativi per renderlo uno strumento importante, non solo per i clinici, ma anche per le Istituzioni e per le Associazioni di pazienti.
