11 ottobre 2022 – La mortalità per tumore e infarto è 2,6 volte più alta tra i pazienti con problemi di salute mentale; lo stigma verso le malattie mentali e le persone che ne soffrono apporta un contributo determinante a questo eccesso di decessi. È quanto sottolinea la Società Italiana di Psichiatria (Sip) in coincidenza a un report pubblicato su The Lancet dedicato all’impatto dello stigma sulle malattie mentali. Il dato citato dalla Sip si riferisce a uno studio condotto in Emilia Romagna e pubblicato sulla rivista Psychiatry Research. Nella ricerca, che ha confrontato un campione di pazienti psichiatrici con la popolazione generale, “il numero di decessi dei pazienti psichiatrici è risultato due volte più alto rispetto a quello della popolazione generale. Questo significa che avere un disturbo psichiatrico comporta un rischio di morte superiore a più del doppio di quello atteso nella popolazione generale”, commentano Massimo di Giannantonio ed Enrico Zanalda, co-presidenti della società scientifica, che si riunirà a congresso dal 12 al 15 ottobre a Genova. “I dati emersi indicano che lo stigma pesa anche sui ritardi negli accessi alle cure e sulle difficoltà di adesione a programmi di prevenzione e screening”, affermano i due specialisti che invitano ad adottare “azioni radicali e urgenti, a livello globale a partire da corsi di formazione obbligatori per tutto il personale sanitario e socio assistenziale, sui diritti e i bisogni delle persone con disturbi psichici”. Per la Sip occorre fare di più anche sul fronte degli investimenti nei servizi di salute mentale: “In Italia si investe nei servizi di salute mentale il 2,9% del Fondo Sanitario Nazionale. Troppo poco per rispondere adeguatamente ai bisogni di oltre 4 milioni di italiani con un disturbo della salute mentale, un numero costantemente in crescita”, concludono di Giannantonio e Zanalda.
