6 dicembre 2021 – Le difficoltà di accesso ai servizi sanitari a causa della pandemia, la paura del contagio, un calo di attenzione verso i tumori hanno causato una drastica riduzione delle diagnosi di cancro negli Stati Uniti che, per alcuni tumori, ha toccato il 23%. È quanto emerge da uno studio condotto da ricercatori della University of Maryland e pubblicato su Cancer, rivista dell’American Cancer Society. La ricerca ha esaminato i dati di 9 milioni di veterani americani afferenti a 1.244 strutture mediche. In questo campione, tra il 2018 e il 2020 sono state effettuate 3,9 milioni di procedure diagnostiche da cui sono emersi 251.647 mila nuovi tumori. Analizzando i dati nel dettaglio, i ricercatori hanno scoperto un’importante riduzione sia delle procedure, sia delle diagnosi nel primo anno di pandemia: il numero delle colonscopie si è ridotto del 45% rispetto alla media dei due anni precedenti, quello delle biopsie della prostata del 29%, delle TAC al torace per verificare la presenza di un tumore al polmone del 10%, delle cistoscopie per visualizzare la vescica del 21%. Di pari passo sono calate le diagnosi di cancro da un minimo del 13% a un massimo del 23% a seconda della localizzazione del tumore. L’entità del calo delle indagini diagnostiche e delle diagnosi di cancro variava di Stato in Stato (in alcuni la riduzione delle colonscopie si è più che dimezzata); inoltre il rallentamento delle procedure è proseguito anche dopo che le restrizioni iniziali legate alla pandemia sono state allentate. “L’interruzione dell’assistenza sanitaria elettiva durante il picco della pandemia è stata una scelta necessaria”, ha detto il coordinatore dello studio Brajesh Lal che ora invita a recuperare al più presto le diagnosi di cancro perdute.
