Roma, 12 ottobre 2021 – In tutto il mondo un paziente oncologico ogni sette ha perso operazioni potenzialmente salvavita durante i vari lockdown causati dall’emergenza Coronavirus. E’ quanto emerge da una ricerca britannica condotta dall’Università di Birmingham e pubblicato sulla rivista Lancet Oncology. Lo studio ha analizzato gli andamenti dei 15 diversi tumori solidi tra i più comuni in 61 Paesi.
Gli scienziati hanno confrontato le cancellazioni e i ritardi di interventi chirurghi contro il cancro durante i lockdown con quelli durante i periodi con restrizioni più limitate. Durante i blocchi completi, un paziente su sette (il 15%) non aveva ricevuto l’operazione che era stata pianificata. Nei periodi di restrizione più leggera, invece, il tasso di questa stessa percentuale è risultato molto basso (0,6%). I pazienti fragili, quelli con cancro allo stadio avanzato e quelli in attesa di un intervento chirurgico nei Paesi a reddito medio-basso avevano tutti meno probabilità di subire l’intervento di cui avevano urgente bisogno. “La nostra ricerca rivela l’impatto collaterale delle chiusure durante la pandemia sui pazienti in attesa di un intervento chirurgico contro il cancro – spiega James Glasbey, dell’Università di Birmingham e coautore principale dello studio – Sebbene questi blocchi siano fondamentali per salvare vite umane e ridurre la diffusione del virus, garantire la capacità di un intervento chirurgico sicuro per il cancro dovrebbe essere parte del piano di ogni Paese per garantire una salute continua di tutta la popolazione”. I ricercatori hanno analizzato i dati di oltre 20.000 pazienti adulti affetti da tipi di cancro tra cui sarcoma del colon-retto, esofageo, gastrico, della testa e del collo, toracico, epatico, pancreatico, prostatico, vescicale, renale, ginecologico, mammario, dei tessuti molli, il sarcoma osseo e le neoplasie intracraniche.
