12 gennaio 2022 – I ragazzi che vivono un’adolescenza felice tendono ad avere una salute migliore una volta diventati adulti. È quanto emerge da uno studio condotto dalla Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health di Baltimora pubblicato sul Journal of the American Heart Association. I ricercatori hanno seguito per circa 20 anni, a partire dalla metà degli anni Novanta, 3.478 adolescenti americani mettendo in relazione 5 indicatori psicologici misurati durante l’adolescenza (ottimismo, felicità, autostima, senso appartenenza e sentirsi amati) con diversi valori indicativi della salute cardio-metabolica (colesterolo, pressione, emoglobina glicata, indice di massa corporea). Dallo studio è emerso che chi da ragazzo aveva un punteggio di benessere psicologico più alto aveva una probabilità di circa il 70% più alta di conservare buoni indicatori di salute cardio-metabolica alla soglia dei 40 anni. Ciò, scrivono i ricercatori, “può ritardare o prevenire l’insorgenza delle malattie cardiovascolari”. I meccanismi che legano il benessere psicologico in adolescenza con la salute cardiovascolare più in là con gli anni non sono pienamente compresi: alcuni studi, scrivono i ricercatori, “dimostrano che le risorse psicologiche nell’adolescenza proteggono i giovani dagli effetti deleteri dello stress sociale”. Inoltre, “risorse come l’ottimismo e altri aspetti del benessere psicologico sono legati anche comportamenti che migliorano la salute come l’attività fisica, la dieta e il mancato uso del tabacco”. Non è da escludere, inoltre, conclude il team, “che le risorse psicologiche abbiano effetti diretti anche sui processi biologici”.
