Chi inizia a fumare prima dei venti anni diventa più dipendente dalla nicotina e ha maggiori difficoltà a smettere. Per questo occorrerebbe aumentare l’età legale per acquistare sigarette a 22 anni o più. Questo il messaggio che arriva dllo studio del National Hospital Organization Kyoto Medical Center, presentato all’edizione 2023 del Congresso europeo di Cardiologia. La ricerca ha coinvolto 1.382 fumatori, di cui il 30% erano donne. L’età media al momento in cui si sono recati per la prima volta presso la clinica per smettere di fumare era di 58 anni. Circa 556 aveva iniziato prima dei 20 anni, mentre 826 a 20 anni o più. I fumatori precoci hanno riferito di fare ricorso a un numero maggiore di sigarette al giorno, 25, e avevano livelli respiratori di monossido di carbonio più elevati rispetto a quelli che avevano iniziato più tardi. Solo il 46% ha smesso di fumare con successo rispetto al 56% di coloro che avevano iniziato in età più matura. “I nostri risultati – rileva Koji Hasegawa, uno degli autori dello studio – mostrano che iniziare a fumare precocemente è un’abitudine collegata a una maggiore dipendenza dalla nicotina, anche in giovane età adulta. La ricerca indica che l’aumento dell’età legale per acquistare tabacco fino a 22 anni o più potrebbe portare a una riduzione del numero di persone a rischio di conseguenze negative per la salute”.
