7 settembre 2022 – Anche se in Scandinavia negli ultimi 35 anni si è osservato un incremento dei casi di gliomi, una famiglia di tumori del sistema nervoso centrale, questo aumento non è connesso all’uso dei telefonini. È questa la conclusione di uno studio coordinato dall’International Agency for Research on Cancer (Iarc) e pubblicato sulla rivista Environment International. I ricercatori hanno analizzato i registri tumori di Danimarca, Finlandia, Norvegia e Svezia per censire tutti i casi di gliomi tra il 1979 e il 2016. Si sono quindi concentrati sulla popolazione maschile che all’inizio degli anni Novanta aveva tra i 35 e i 44 anni, i primi a utilizzare i telefoni cellulari. “Se i campi elettromagnetici a radiofrequenza emessi dai telefoni cellulari causassero gliomi, il marcato aumento nell’uso dei telefoni cellulari nella popolazione generale negli ultimi decenni si tradurrebbe in un aumento della comparsa di gliomi”, spiegano i ricercatori. L’analisi, invece, non ha riscontrato nessun legame tra l’uso del telefonino, soprattutto in quella fetta della popolazione, e l’aumento del rischio di tumori. “Nei Paesi nordici, l’uso dei telefoni cellulari è aumentato notevolmente a metà degli anni Novanta, soprattutto tra gli uomini di mezza età. I tassi di incidenza del glioma registrati in questi Paesi hanno seguito tendenze a lungo termine di piccoli e graduali incrementi; tra il 1979 e il 2016 non sono state osservate modificazioni di questi trend”, scrive in una nota la Iarc. “Questa osservazione è compatibile con l’assenza di qualsiasi impatto misurabile dell’uso del cellulare sul rischio di glioma, per le tecnologie utilizzate in passato e ai livelli di esposizione incontrati in quel momento”, conclude.
