Roma, 15 gennaio 2021 – “Eravamo preparati per un inizio 2021 impegnativo ed è stato proprio così. A un anno dal primo report dell’Oms su questo virus, abbiamo nuovi strumenti a disposizione e molte più conoscenze, ma rimaniamo nella morsa di Covid-19, mentre i casi aumentano e affrontiamo nuove sfide portate dal virus che muta”. Perché, “come tutti i virus, circolando Sars-CoV-2 è cambiato nel tempo. Ed è comprensibile la preoccupazione per il possibile impatto della variante 202012/01”, la variante inglese, dal momento che ad oggi “25 Paesi della Regione europea” su 53 “segnalano il nuovo ceppo”. E’ il quadro tracciato da Hans Kluge direttore regionale dell’Organizzazione mondiale della sanità per l’Europa, in occasione di un briefing con la stampa russa. “Questa variante è ‘preoccupante’ in quanto ha aumentato la trasmissibilità. Finora comprendiamo che non vi è alcun cambiamento significativo nella malattia prodotta, il che significa che Covid-19 non è né più né meno grave. Si diffonde in tutte le fasce d’età e i bambini non sembrano essere a maggior rischio”, puntualizza. “Ma con una maggiore trasmissibilità e una simile gravità di malattia, la variante solleva allarme: senza un maggiore controllo finalizzato a rallentarne la diffusione, ci sarà un maggiore impatto su strutture sanitarie già stressate”, avverte Kluge. “Significa – chiarisce – che per un breve periodo di tempo dobbiamo fare di più di quanto abbiamo fatto, e intensificare le misure sanitarie e sociali per essere certi di poter appiattire la ripida linea verticale” dell’epidemia “in alcuni Paesi. Sono le misure di base che devono essere intensificate per ridurre la trasmissione, alleviare la tensione sui reparti Covid e salvare vite umane. Indossare mascherine, limitare il numero di riunioni e incontri sociali, distanziarsi fisicamente e lavarsi le mani, funzionerà insieme a sistemi adeguati di test e tracciamento, a supporti adeguati per la quarantena e l’isolamento e sempre più vaccinazioni”. Altro punto che viene ribadito da Kluge è che i Paesi devono “aumentare il sequenziamento genomico degli isolati virali di Sars-CoV-2 e condividere i dati. La solidarietà nella scienza in tutta la nostra Regione è vitale”, incalza.In questo inizio 2021 la trasmissione di Sars-CoV-2 nell’area “è stata sostenuta” e mostra “tassi di infezione molto elevati”, spiega Kluge, invitando a non abbassare la guardia neanche dove la situazione sembra all’apparenza più rosea. “In quei Paesi dove ci sono segni di stabilizzazione o addirittura di diminuzione dell’incidenza, questo dato deve essere preso con una certa cautela. Non può ad esempio ancora essere determinato l’impatto del periodo di vacanza, delle riunioni familiari e di comunità e l’eventuale allentamento delle distanze fisiche e dell’uso di mascherine. Anche le attività di test e notifica potrebbero essere state inferiori durante le festività natalizie, dando luogo a un quadro incompleto dell’attuale situazione epidemiologica”, avverte.
