L’Organizzazione Mondiale della Sanità sconsiglia l’uso di dolcificanti con poche o senza calorie per il controllo del peso o per ridurre il rischio di malattie. La raccomandazione è contenuta nelle nuove Linee Guida dell’Oms, basate su una revisione sistematica degli studi da cui emerge come l’uso di dolcificanti non zuccherini “non porta alcun beneficio a lungo termine nella riduzione del grasso corporeo negli adulti o nei bambini”, mentre potrebbe comportare “potenziali effetti indesiderati”, “come un aumento del rischio di diabete, malattie cardiovascolari e mortalità negli adulti”. La raccomandazione “si applica a tutte le persone, a eccezione delle persone con diabete preesistente, e include tutti i dolcificanti non nutritivi sintetici, presenti in natura o modificati che non sono classificati come zuccheri presenti negli alimenti e nelle bevande”, ovvero “acesulfame K, aspartame, advantame, ciclamati, neotame, saccarina, sucralosio, stevia e derivati della stevia”. La raccomandazione non si applica ai prodotti per la cura e l’igiene personale contenenti queste sostanze come dentifrici o farmaci, né a agli zuccheri a basso contenuto calorico. “Sostituire gli zuccheri liberi con dolcificanti non zuccherini non aiuta a controllare il peso a lungo termine. Le persone devono prendere in considerazione altri modi per ridurre l’assunzione di zuccheri liberi, come il consumo di alimenti con zuccheri naturali, come la frutta, o cibi e bevande non zuccherati”, afferma Francesco Branca, direttore dell’Oms per la nutrizione e la sicurezza alimentare. Una prima bozza del documento era stata pubblicata dall’Oms a luglio 2022.
