Roma, 1 giugno 2021 – La pandemia ha significativamente cambiato le abitudini degli italiani rispetto al fumo: dopo una riduzione ad aprile 2020 rispetto a gennaio 2020 (pre lockdown), c’è stato un aumento dei fumatori a maggio 2021, con una prevalenza del 26,2% (circa 11,3 milioni) rispetto anche a novembre 2020 (24%), più di un milione di fumatori in più (1,2 milioni). Lo dicono i nuovi dati di uno studio longitudinale dell’Istituto superiore di sanità (Iss), in collaborazione con l’Istituto farmacologico Mario Negri, presentato oggi in occasione della Giornata mondiale senza tabacco. Nel dettaglio, sono state realizzate 3 survey su un campione (3.000) di 18-74 anni rappresentativo della popolazione italiana nei seguenti tempi: gennaio 2020 (pre lockdown), aprile 2020 (pieno lockdown), novembre 2020 (parziale lockdown), maggio 2021 (parziali riaperture). “Un ruolo chiave nell’aumento dei fumatori – commenta Roberta Pacifici, direttore del Centro nazionale dipendenze e doping dell’Iss – lo hanno avuto i nuovi prodotti del tabacco (sigarette a tabacco riscaldato, Htp) e le e-cig. Infatti il loro uso in Italia contribuisce alla iniziazione e alla ricaduta del consumo di sigarette tradizionali e ne ostacola la cessazione, alimentando l’epidemia tabagica”. Rispetto all’iniziazione, lo studio rileva che a novembre 2020 il 4,7% dei mai fumatori di sigarette tradizionali ad aprile (durante il lockdown duro) è diventato fumatore. Infatti, mentre il 2,1% di chi non ha mai usato le e-cig è diventato fumatore di sigarette tradizionali, ben 10 volte di più, il 19,6% di chi è un utilizzatore di e-cig, è diventato anche fumatore. Similmente, mentre il 3,2% di chi non ha mai usato Htp è diventato fumatore, il 19,3% di chi è utilizzatore di Htp è diventato anche fumatore di sigarette tradizionali. Rispetto alle ricadute, si evidenzia che il 17,2% di chi era un ex fumatore di sigarette tradizionali ad aprile durante il lockdown duro, a novembre è tornato a consumare sigarette tradizionali.
ISS: 1,2 milioni di fumatori in più, boom in pandemia
