25 gennaio 2023 – Gli anziani che assumono fino a 10 farmaci al giorno hanno un rischio triplo di eventi avversi, soprattutto le donne. Lo rivela uno studio sul British Journal of General Practice coordinato da Emma Wallace, della University College Cork. Complessivamente, una persona anziana su quattro sperimenta reazioni avverse ai farmaci prescritti dal proprio medico di famiglia, suggerisce la ricerca. Secondo lo studio, tra i farmaci più comunemente associati alle reazioni avverse vi sono quelli utilizzati per il trattamento dell’ipertensione e di altre patologie cardiache, forti antidolorifici come il tramadolo e antibiotici come l’amoxicillina.
Un rapporto del Servizio Sanitario Inglese ha rilevato che il 10% delle prescrizioni mediche dispensate attraverso l’assistenza primaria in Inghilterra sono inappropriate o inutili. Lo studio ha monitorato 592 pazienti di età pari o superiore a 70 anni in 15 ambulatori generali per un periodo di sei anni. Uno su quattro ha sperimentato almeno una reazione avversa. Le reazioni avverse più comuni sono secchezza delle fauci, gonfiore delle caviglie, mal di testa e nausea. Secondo i ricercatori, i pazienti a cui erano stati prescritti 10 o più farmaci avevano un rischio tre volte maggiore di sperimentare una reazione avversa. Secondo lo studio, le donne avevano almeno il 50% di probabilità in più di avere una reazione avversa rispetto agli uomini. Nel complesso, la maggior parte delle reazioni avverse identificate è stata lieve e si è risolta, hanno detto i ricercatori. Tuttavia, circa l’11% era di gravità moderata e otto pazienti hanno dovuto essere ricoverati in ospedale a causa delle reazioni. “Le reazioni avverse da farmaci possono essere difficili da identificare negli anziani, poiché spesso si presentano come sintomi non specifici”, scrivono i ricercatori. “I medici di base sono nella posizione ideale per rilevare l’insorgenza di reazioni avverse da farmaci prescritti nell’assistenza primaria e in altri contesti di cura. La de-prescrizione di farmaci inefficaci e di quelli non più clinicamente indicati è un approccio per ridurre il rischio di reazioni avverse nei pazienti anziani”, concludono gli esperti.
